Carolina Forest Homes
Carolina Forest water features are all man-made, including the Intracoastal waterway that runs through one part of the town. The Lewis Ocean Bay Preserve, an undisturbed natural habitat set aside by the state of South Carolina, borders Carolina Forest on one side. Carolina Forest neighborhoods are popular among new Myrtle Beach area residents because of the town's family-friendly suburban feel, it's five-lane highways to provide easy navigation, and its close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.
Carolina Forest is a planned unit development of nearly 20,000 single-family and multi-family homes. Most residential and commercial development follows the master plan created jointly by Horry County and International Paper, the company that has owned the land since 1937. Carolina Forest features some waterfront property and great infrastructure connecting Carolina Forest homes with each other as well as those in the surrounding area. Families settling in the Myrtle Beach area seem to have taken a liking to Carolina Forest for its excellent school systems, well-planned layout and its proximity to tourist attractions.
Carolina Forest History
Carolina Forest was once part of a larger tract of land called the Buist Tract, owned by Burroughs & Chapin. International Paper bought the Buist Tract in 1937, donating part of the 30,000 acres to be used by Coastal Carolina University and about 9,000 more acres went to the state of South Carolina for the Lewis Ocean Bay Preserve. Eventually, International Paper would largely foot the bill for the completion of five-lane Carolina Forest Boulevard. Also, a total of about 500 acres of the land would eventually be sold to create a golf course and more Horry County schools to serve the burgeoning population of Carolina Forest.
