The blue crab festival was started almost 25 years ago by Little River locals to preserve and maintain the atmosphere of the waterfront area.
Little River is the northernmost section of the Grand Strand, just below North Carolina. Traveling through Little River, vacationers will see 100 year old live oaks encircling unique shops, and marinas along the waterfront. In the 1850's Little River was a prosperous port; now fishing and shrimp boats still depart daily to bring back their fresh catch for local restaurants and fish wholesalers.
From a dock in Little River you are only a short boat ride on the Intracoastal Waterway from where it opens up to the Atlantic Ocean. Marinas are found throughout Little River, taking advantage of the easy access from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean.
Little River has come to be known for the famous Blue Crab festival that started in the 1970's. It has come a long way from the sparse attendance in the beginning; today over 50,000 people attend the 2-day May event, enjoying entertainment, world class food, purchasing from over 200 vendors, and to feast on Blue Crabs.
