Murrells Inlet History
The U.S. postal service is responsible for the naming of Murrells Inlet, though the inspiration for the name is unknown. By 1850, almost 47 million pounds of rice were produced in Murrells Inlet and the surrounding area. By 1916, all the Murrells Inlet rice plantations were out of business, however, largely due to damage caused by hurricanes and Civil War battles.
Fishing became the new town trade and a leading recreational activity as well. This village's history is rich with lore of pirates and ghosts, and it is a truly enchanting place to live.
