Myrtle Beach History
Myrtle Beach was named the 13th fastest growing metropolitan area, according to the 2000 U.S. Census. It wasn’t always so populous, however. The area was inhabited primarily by the Waccamaw Indians in the years leading up to the American Revolution. The Withers family was among the few settlers residing there for many years, until they were scared away when the house of R.F. Withers was swept into the ocean by a bad storm, drowning 18 people inside. After that, the area eventually became a getaway for nearby lumber and railroad workers.
The city was founded in 1938 and its name, relating to the prominently seen wax myrtle bush, was the result of a naming contest.
