In 1968, four small towns at the northern edge of the Grand Strand - Crescent Beach, Ocean Drive Beach, Windy Hill Beach, and Cherry Grove Beach - joined to form the city of North Myrtle Beach. More than 30 years later the city of North Myrtle Beach is home to over 14,000 permanent residents, and many others visit throughout the year.

Birthplace of the Shag

The Shag originated in the Ocean Drive section in the 1940's, and is considered by many to be the South Carolina State Dance. It's a cross between the Jitterbug and Swing Dancing, with sleek moves originally suited for beach music, which some say also started in this area. The Society of Stranders (SOS) sponsors two week-long Shagging events in April and September that attract more than 35,000 visitors to Main Street .
