Pawleys Island Homes
Located 70 miles north of Charleston and about 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach, Pawleys Island remains a highly sought after location due to its slow development, sparse population and beautiful beaches. This has been helped by the fact that commercial and industrial construction are banned on the adjunct Pawleys Island, a four-mile strip of land connected to the mainland town of Pawleys Island by a causeway.
There are a wide array of Pawleys Island homes, often described as "arrogantly shabby" because of the weathered look of the commonly used cypress siding. Although Hurricane Hugo destroyed some of the old cottages in 1989, they were replaced by newer, modern homes. The town has a good mix of modern residential and older, residential styles, with each home having its own unique stamp.
The island itself has been particularly slow to develop, largely due to a ban on commercial and industrial construction on the four-mile-long island. The mainland town of Pawleys Island has seen some commercial construction in recent years, much to the chagrin of many residents, though this growth pales in comparison to the pace of Myrtle Beach. Several distinct, older homes, such as Beachaven, still stand in Pawleys Island.
The town of Pawleys Island is breezy and sparsely populated, with temperate water from May to October and plenty of fishing, boating, golfing and other recreational activities.
Pawleys Island History
Although the earliest known inhabitants were the Waccamaw and Winyah Indians, this four-mile island has long been known as one of the oldest summer resorts on the east coast. Rice plantation owners and their families would spend summers here as early as the 18th Century. Pawleys Island historic district is located at the island's eastern end. Several rustic cottages from the early 1800's still stand there today. In the mid-20th Century, the island banned commercial and industrial structures, although a few structures were grandfathered in and still stand today.
