Socastee Homes
There is no denying the rich history of Socastee, from the beautiful homes to the old-fashioned turn crank bridge dating back to 1936.
There is a wide variety of Socastee real estate available. Home shoppers can find Socastee condos, historic Socastee homes and even Socastee waterfront properties. In general, Socastee real estate is relatively affordable when compared to other parts of the Grand Strand. Socastee homes are also a good investment, alongside the scenic Intracoastal Waterway and only a short distance from all the area's major tourist attractions.
Socastee History
Socastee was home to a 1781 battle between American and British troops. Less than a century later, the town was established as a profitable center for turpentine and tar production. The main part of town also included a saw mill, grist mill and cotton gin. That original area is now preserved as the Socastee Historic District. The Socastee swing bridge opened in 1936, at 217 feet long and 24 feet wide. It was originally turned by a hand crank and was scheduled to be closed upon completion of a new bridge. However, the historic swing bridge remained open because traffic flow across the Intracoastal Waterway required it.
