Just 4 miles south of Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach was incorporated in 1864 with 881 residents. Significant growth did not happen until after 1956 when the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base was reactivated. In the 1960's Surfside Beach began to build its reputation as a family beach and by the 1970's public parking and walkways to the beach were established.
