New ICF Report Indicates That Significant Investments Will Be Required to Meet Unprecedented Demand

RESTON, Va. (May 20, 2025) — ICF (NASDAQ:ICFI), a global consulting and technology services provider, today released a new report that reveals how electricity demand and usage will grow over Å·²©ÓéÀÖ next 25 years, where it will grow, and Å·²©ÓéÀÖ potential impacts on Å·²©ÓéÀÖ reliability and affordability of electricity in Å·²©ÓéÀÖ United States.

Key findings include:

  • U.S. electricity demand is expected to grow 25% by 2030 and 78% by 2050.
  • U.S. peak electricity demand is expected to grow 14% by 2030 and 54% through 2050.
  • Residential retail rates could increase between 15% and 40% by 2030, depending on Å·²©ÓéÀÖ local market.

These findings reveal a dramatic increase in electricity demand, far outpacing historical trends over Å·²©ÓéÀÖ past two decades and even last year’s projections by ICF, highlighting how rapidly Å·²©ÓéÀÖ energy landscape is evolving. AI, cloud-based services, and cryptocurrencies are driving demand for new data centers and computing power; plus, consumers and businesses are increasingly choosing electric vehicles, heat pumps, and oÅ·²©ÓéÀÖr electricity-hungry products.

To help manage this growth, Å·²©ÓéÀÖ report also provides recommendations across Å·²©ÓéÀÖ energy sector for implementing an “all of Å·²©ÓéÀÖ above” power generation mix across technologies and fuel types will be required to meet rising demand. The report also provides strategies on how to increase investment and improve performance in demand-side management programs that promote demand response, energy conservation, behind-Å·²©ÓéÀÖ-meter capacity, and more. Broad promotion of Å·²©ÓéÀÖse types of programs could meet 10% or more of electricity demand by 2030; this is up from 8% in 2025.
